I wonder if Stobart missed a trick today, with Southend United playing away at Carlisle they might have laid on a cheap flight for fans between their two airports which could have earned some useful positive publicity.......

Hopefully in the future....
However, with the present restriction on the Carlisle runway of max 12 Tonnes for commercial flights, it would be difficult for the economics to stack up for an ad-hoc charter(s).

True, but it would be a sort of loss leader I guess. What type of aircraft would have been possible, with a max operating weight of 12 tonnes? An ATR would be too heavy, I think. Maybe a J41? A Saab 340?

As you say, hopefully in the future. I see that the Carlisle Airport Manager is setting Autumn 2010 as a possible starting time for airline operations. And since Southend United lost, let's hope they are still playing in the same division as Carlisle next season.

o/t ,devonian, lets hope they are still playing full stop! :(

SAEN were out at the weekend putting more leaflets through the door urging people to oppose the runway extension. Again very sensationalist, scaremongering and bending the facts to suit.

Again, can I suggest that Members write a letter to the Echo pointing out the inaccuracies and putting the correct information in front of people.
I cannot do that from France as I don't have a copy of the leaflet. Also my foreign address tends to reduce the impact compared with a letter written from Southend or Rochford etc.. I am told the leaflet suggests that 53,300 movements per annum is a huge increase, whereas it's already 40,000 and has been as high as 71,000. That alone would form the basis of a letter to the Editor.
Also, has everyone made their comments to the Council concerning the planning application? It's very easy and, ironically, the easiest way is to go to the SAEN website where their homepage has a direct link to the applications 'comments' button.

Express flight, I have not seen the leaflet in the flesh either, but I would suggest that it is probably this one: http://saen.org.uk/resources/planningappleaflet.pdf on SAEN website, as they published the other two leaflets they posted around town on here similarly.

Thames Gateway, yes that is the leaflet, and yes expressflight the link provided by SAEN did help me write a short note supporting expansion.

I have also submitted my support for the planning application. I'm afraid SAEN's logic in opposing the runway extension is totally beyond me. Surely they must understand that if the application is refused, then Stobart's will look to make money elsewhere, using the agreement already in place which allows them 900 + night flights per month. They seem to think that because there aren't that many night flights at the moment, things will stay the same.
I wonder how people will feel about SAEN if this planning application is refused and then next year and beyond, they're then regularly woken as result in a big increase in night freighter flights. Then just to improve their mood, on the way to work, they're stuck in traffic on Eastwoodbury Lane due to the barriers being closed for long periods of time.
I think Kiti and her friends have totally lost the plot (if they ever found it in the first place) !

Roche - exactly the gist of my letter to the Yellow Advertiser.
Sounds like you just need to put it into letter form and it would make an excellent contribution to the Echo letters page - hint!!

I've made my comments on the Rochford DC Planning Application site. I hope everybody else has.....?

With United's stadium plans in tatters surely Southend won't pass up the other opportunities for growth and employment offered by expansion of the Airport...... or will the town just continue to slowly decay?

I see that engineering works are planned on the Wickford-Southend Victoria stretch of line for the first two Sundays in December. Hopefully this is for track possession related to the station construction.

Great to see a 2 page article in todays Echo newspaper giving the airport's side of the argument over expansion. Even more of a surprise was the accompanying editorial which gave unqualified support for the expansion, including the runway extension.
With HSBC announcing over 700 job losses in Southend yesterday, the area badly needs the jobs expansion of the airport could provide (don't think this article is on the Echo website yet).
