DOZENS of jobs will be created in Cambridge thanks to the soaraway success of the city’s new VIP jet business, it has been revealed.
Leading executive aviation company ExecuJet has established a base at Cambridge Airport, and with interest in the Olympics taking off, the company says it expects to treble its workforce from 15 to 50 by the end of the year.
In the run-up to the games, it is planning to fly dignitaries and spectators in to Cambridge and, possibly, competitors.
The firm, which flies Cessna Citation jets, officially launched its operation at the airport last month, using purpose-built hangar, office and lounge facilities constructed by Marshall.
Archie Garden, the airport’s director, said: “We’re really pleased with the partnership we have with ExecuJet – and the airport itself is growing, and going from strength to strength.
“Flying by executive jet is perhaps not as expensive as people might think. A seat on a Citation from here to Manchester would be about £500, and the journey would take 45 minutes – whereas by road it would be four hours. That’s a huge saving in executives’ time.”
John Brutnell, UK manager of ExecuJet, said: “The growth in executive aviation at present is massive, and we are delighted to be in Cambridge. We’re looking to relocate all our operations in the UK to Cambridge, including our charter business and aircraft maintenance, and that means by the end of the year our staffing should go up from 15 to 50.
“East London is only an hour away from Cambridge, and we’re sure that will mean a lot of business for us in flying in people for the Olympic Games this summer. We were one of the main operators flying people into South Africa for the World Cup.”
The operation is moving into a second hangar at the airport, and Mr Garden said Marshall was considering building a further hangar on Newmarket Road as trade continues to expand
