I know that this subject has been mentioned in various threads in the past, but whilst reading NOTAMs yesterday there seems to be a reference to ILS construction type work between 5th March and 16th May.

A question was asked this morning 8th by an arriving aircraft, this new ILS going to be anything other than CAT 1, the answer was negative. Which is kind of true. the New ILS, I am informed, will be capable of CAT III operations. However as you know it takes more than the ILS to make a CAT III runway, AGL for one, which would be a massive upgrade for HUY. (Supplementary approach and TDZs) I am also unsure as to how the close proximity of the A18 would affect any CAT III ambitions, being so close to the threshold. and the cat III holding points would end up in middle of the southern apron.... rendering Stand 1 useless....

I know in an ideal world CAT III would be installed at HUY, but is it genuinely needed in terms of number of diverts when vompared to other nearby airports that do have full CAT III capabilities?

Regards the ILS, the question was asked this evening when the ILS would be back, the reply was calibrating tomorrow and Friday, should be back Friday.

Hypothetically (ignoring the cost) what would there be to stop them installing CAT III on the 02 end only, leaving 20 as CAT I? I know 20 is the most commonly used, however surely most low-vis weather conditions arise when there is low wind? So for the bigger stuff it wouldn't necessarily matter which end the CAT III was on? I would appreciate it if someone clued up on the subject could clarify.

ILS cannot be installed on 02 as the A18 would pass through the localiser beam forming area, and the crash gate would need to come down too, which means the airport would need to buy the field to extend the boundary and pay to reroute the A18 away from the runway...

Even though the A18 is on the opposite side to 02 end? Would make sense why they havent bothered with CAT III.

The Localiser is located at the end of the runway, hence any 02 LLZ would have to be in the field the other side of the A18, and the A18 would have to be either moved or severely restricted to traffic movements when anything was on ILS approach. On Cat III the clear and graded area around the runway is much larger than on Cat I, hence the holding points would move away from the runway even further, and the undershoot would be extended into the A18 area in the case of a 20 Cat III, and also as said above, the crash gate to the A18 would have to be removed in both scenarios.
