The SAS service from Copenhagen to Newcastle is also a recent introduction. It is also operated by Cimber Air using a CRJ200. It operates on only four evenings per week, Monday to Thursday inclusive. In May 2013, it carried 1,224 passengers , which is 34 per flight or 68%.

The Newcastle figures look quite good, which raises the question of whether HUY can match them and create a viable route. It is interesting to look at the Humberside - Esbjerg figures from an earlier era, which show that Scandinavian routes can survive for a considerable time if suitable-sized equipment is operated. Genair began the route in 1982 using a 36 seater Shorts 360 with one rotation each weekday. In 1983 they carried 4,868 passengers, a load factor of 26.5%. The route and the airline closed in 1984. Cimber Air revived the route about 1987 using a 26 seater Nord 262. They averaged about 6,500 passengers per annum, which is 49%. They handed the route over to another Danish airline, Newair, in 1990. Newair employed a Handley Page Jetstream which acheived 5,000 passengers p.a. (a load factor of 54%). The route was worthwhile enough to be operated over a ten year period on relatively low load factors. Esbjerg is an oil industry destination, but the airlines offered APEX fares to attract leisure passengers as well. The positives to be taken when comparing with the Copenhagen route are 1. Esbjerg had very little connectivity compared with Copenhagen. 2. The three airlines marketed the route independently (apart from Genair's arrangement with British Caledonian). They did not have the benefit of the strong SAS brand.

New Marketing materials have appeared at the airport over the last few days, and images of such on the Humberside Airport twitter feed (https://twitter.com/Humberside/media/grid).
What surprises me somewhat is the focus on connections to Poland available through SAS.

Yes, Poland would be quicker by Wizzair from Doncaster, provided that the services are frequent enough for business use. Other considerations in favour of SAS are full service and loyalty points. Frequent flyers do not seem to like no-frills carriers, but they do like leisure flying. So clocking up air miles on a hub and spoke service acts as an incentive to book. Regarding the Esbjerg route, further research reveals that AirUK took it over when Genair failed in 1984. They also used a Shorts 360. They handed over to Cimber Air in 1987 and continued to feature the route in their timetable.

The Daily Mail has a full page article today reporting on Mr. Clegg's official opening of the Lincolnshire Offshore Wind Farm. The slant of the article is the lack of U.K. content in the supply of equipment and services for this £1bn. project. ' Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg claimed 30,000 British jobs would be created by the end of the decade by investing in renewable energy'. 'There are turbines out there in the North Sea which have not touched U.K. mainland' 'a new £1bn. windfarm off the Lincolnshire coast is being maintained by teams of workers flown in from Scandinavia.' 'Scandinavian Airlines will even begin a six (sic) day a week service between Copenhagen and Humberside Airport in October to keep up with demand.'

With just a month or so to the start of the service, has anyone heard how advance bookings are going?

Flight SK1234 to Copenhagen departs HUY at 1800 hours today, according to the airports departure board. Is this an error or the start of the scheduled service? No arrival is currently showing.

Almost certainly an error. However, bookings on the new route are said to be 'going very well'.

There has been a Danish Trade Mission in the Humberside area for the last 3 days, this possibly will be the flight taking them back.

The last new hub destination service to be started from Humberside was the Air France route to Paris CDG operated by Gill Airways. It commenced on 4th May 1999 and continued until Gill Airways experienced severe financial difficulties on 16th December 2000. The route was shared with Teesside until 1st April 2000, at which point MME was dropped and the aircraft (by then an ATR72, which had replaced the initial ATR42) was based at HUY. The initial monthly HUY/CDG passenger figures grew steadily as follows : 886, 1396, 1714, 1875. The annual totals over that era make interesting reading as the Amsterdam route was growing strongly at the time.
1998 Paris 0 Amsterdam 109,137 (+15.1%) 1999 Paris 13,113 Amsterdam 115,669 (+6.0%) 2000 Paris 27,391 Amsterdam 125,773 (+8.7%) 2001 Paris 0 Amsterdam 131,193 (+4.3%)
MME had 8,514 Paris passengers in 1999 and 3,831 in 2000.
Competition from Air France did not seem to adversely affect the KLM (it was prior to the merger)route. When the Paris route was closed down, the 27,000 passengers did not all migrate to Amsterdam. This suggests that some of the traffic was point-to-point. It also suggests that the Paris route was attracting hub-passengers from further afield. I know that at about that time there were quite a number of Nottinghamshire-based business travellers who used HUY in preference to EMA.

Interesting to see the CDG figures. It was a shame to see the end of that service and I believe at the time effort was made to find a replacement prior to the service ending. I believe the closest it came to being reinstated was after the merger with KLM, when there were plans proposed to add a couple of daily CDG rotations (presumably using a regional franchise) to strengthen their position in the region. I believe they were concerned about competing with themselves on prices somewhat and so it never happened.
A CPH route has been sought since the last regular service was dropped 2 decades ago. It will be interesting to see how long this lasts now that propensity to fly has increased in general since the day's of newair, and it will have the added benefit of interline facilities.

Summer 2014 has been put on sale - see the timetable and booking engine on flysas.co.uk. The good news is a Tuesday flight is added from 1st April (same timings as other weekdays). The not so good news is that the route is suspended during holiday seasons. When also including the Christmas suspension SAS are only operating HUY-CPH for about 10 months a year
Easter - last flight April 16th, resumes April 22nd June - last flight June 4th, resumes June 10th Summer - last flight July 4th, resumes August 24th
The frequency increase is a sign of confidence in the route from SAS IMO, and I hope all parties are working towards eliminating the seasonal suspensions once the route becomes established

Encouraging that SAS are to add an extra rotation on Tuesdays from their Summer 14 schedule, before the first flight has even taken off - Does suggest that the flights are selling reasonably well, as has already been suggested. Shame that there will be so many breaks during the year - the flight is obviously aimed at the business travel market, but just the addition of a 6th weekly rotation is a massive vote of confidence in the new service by SAS.
