Flybe have announced some capacity reductions with effect from 23rd August. The second daily Paris CDG rotation will now only operate on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays, but there will be a Thursday rotation until 5th September. There will be additional Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday rotations between 25th and 27th October (half-term holidays). Newquay (three rotations per week) will now end on 1st October. The inference is that the programme of flights is aimed primarily at leisure rather than business passengers. The schedule is becoming almost as complex as the Thomas Cook Continental Railway Timetable, so future load factor calculations will be more prone to error!

Just to highlight how complex the timetable is becoming, it turns out that today's afternoon Paris will not operate. This is because the new Thursday timetable which ends on 5th September doesn't start until 26th August!

As a quoted company, Flybe put a considerable amount of financial information into the public domain. They have reported that the annual cost of leasing 9 Embraer 195 aircraft is £26m. This works out at £7,915 per aircraft per day. No doubt they allocate the cost over a year by calculating the cost per available seat kilometer or cost per flying hour. It is interesting to calculate what proportion of their ticket price is required to meet the leasing cost. Capacity at DSA is roughly 500,000 passengers per annum. If they achieved 300,000, that would be the equivalent 150,000 return tickets. The lease-cost content of each ticket would be £38. During early and mid-October, capacity is reduced, resulting in only three daily rotations on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. On a Tuesday, there are rotations to Paris, Amsterdam and Jersey. If loads were 55%, 70% and 50% respectively, there would be about 210 passengers each way on the day. The cost of aircraft leasing would work out at £75 per return ticket.

Page 23 of the Flybe annual report for the year ending 31st March 2016 contains the following :-
'Other revenue in Flybe UK ...a 46.7% increase ...driven mainly by an additional £5.7m contract receivables in association with our arrangement in Cardiff'.
This sum is remarkably similar to the quoted cost of two E195 leases. It may possibly indicate that airports which participate in Project Blackbird are bearing the entire leasing costs of the aircraft.
E195 operations commenced at Cardiff in 2015. The first revenue flight was on 1st June. The second aircraft operated from September 2015.

I imagine there may be a 'back to basics' approach. Like Monarch, they seem to be lacking a solid strategy. Their place in the market is a lower cost regional airline. E-Jets to go before the lease is up?

Centreforaviation.com seem to be thinking along the same lines. Today they have published a review ahead of this week's publication of the Flybe interim results. The summary ends '....but a key question for the next CEO will be whether to continue with such aggressive capacity growth in the face of falling fares'.

Flybe have made some further cuts to capacity at DSA over the winter months. The timetable is, as ever, complex because there is additional capacity over Christmas and half-term, with reduced capacity during January.
The basic weekly number of rotations over winter is as follows:-
Alicante 2 Amsterdam 7 Berlin 3 Chambery 1 (8 week season) Dublin 4 Dusseldorf 4 Faro 0 Jersey 2 Malaga 2 Paris 4 Total 29 versus 42 last summer.
Today's Dusseldorf and Berlin flights are being operated by an E175.

The August 2016 passenger figures and load factors are as follows:-
Paris CDG 6,594. 59.4% Berlin TXL 3,005. 70.7% Amsterdam 5,895. 80.6% Faro. 1,688 89.4% Alicante 2,776. 90.5% Malaga. 3,042. 99.2% Jersey 5,659. 77.4% Newquay 2,534. 82.6%
Total 31,193. 75.96%
During the month, the second Paris rotation was discontinued. This resulted in 11 fewer rotations than previously planned. Provided that they retained their booked passengers, the effect was to boost the Paris load factor by 11.2% and the overall load by 4.5%.

The September 2016 traffic figures and load factors are as follows. They are based on the flights which actually took place.
Paris CDG 4,137 42.8% Berlin TXL 2,110 52.6% Amsterdam. 4,516. 63.8% Faro 2,113 99.5% Alicante 3,055 99.6% Malaga 2,802 98.9% Jersey 4,960 70.1% Newquay 2,043 66.6%
Total 25,736 66.1%
Originally, 56 rotations were planned on the Paris route. Only 41 actually took place. This should have had the effect of depressing the passenger numbers but boosting the load factor.

Flybe seem to be ending their Doncaster / Dusseldorf route with a final flight on 5th February 2017. The Flybe online timetable for DSA is not currently available, so it is not possible to see if an alternative route is planned.
