The Echo has today reported the loss of up to 15 jobs (out of around 100 employees at the airport), which Alastair Welch said was "as a result of the collapse of Flightline and the difficult market facing the industry". He said that the changes would not have a major impact on the development of the airport. The job losses are also described as "short term adjustments across the board".
Clearly the management of the airport don't anticipate any sort of upturn in traffic this year. I might be wrong on this one, but it also suggests that maybe the Ford flights will not be returning. Clearly things are very difficult financially at the moment, but this is hardly the sort of major announcement expected from the new owners of the airport after only a few weeks in charge.
Certainly not a good start to the year and my sympathies go to the 15 people affected.

I don't think I would describe this as a "major announcement" and it surely is no real surprise, although I too have great sympathy for those who have lost their jobs.
The collapse of FLT and the suspension of the Ford flights wasn't brought about by any shortcomings at SEN itself, so it shouldn't directly affect the development programme. If anything, it actually emphasizes the fact that SEN must be developed if it is to have a stable future. Reliance on just one "scheduled" service, the odd LCY diversion and a maintenance organisation is not why Stobart bought the airport. The only downside to them at the moment is the loss of some revenue as a result of recent events.
Only if they find that their ability to fund the development programme is compromised by the lack of bank lending should there be any threat to SEN's planned future.
As far as Ford is concerned I understand that they still considering the options available to them, but I agree that no news could be bad news.

I suspect staff at the airport will view this as a "major announcement". Let's hope we hear some positive news soon.

I don't doubt that is a very "major announcement" for the staff involved SENtence, nor that Alastair Welch regrets very much having to take this step, but it is happening everywhere and SEN cannot expect to be immune. While every lost job seems to be the centre of media focus at the moment, I don't remember much media attention when those 15 jobs were created just a couple of years ago. What matters in the wider sense is whether it has any effect on the development plan - after all that is where the real job opportunities will come from in 2011 and beyond - I don't believe it necessarily does.

I was told today that there have been further job cuts at the airport. No idea on numbers or from which areas, but if true it would suggest that there is no pick up in business expected in the short term. Don't know if anyone can confirm this rumour?

Yes and no.
Two jobs will go I understand, but I'm not sure what is the reason. On the other hand additional staff are being taken on in other areas, so there is actually a net increase in the short term.
