Surprising indeed and if it happens I would imagine that Travelsmith are involved. They were very positive about the Easyjet SEN-NQY service when it was launched last year.

Splendid news. As always marketing, frequency and timing will need to be very carefully considered. Now, which six routes I wonder........... how about some from Brussels, Rotterdam, Munster (already leaked), Antwerp, Groningen, Maastricht, Copenhagen, Esbjerg....... hopefully Edinburgh and Belfast too, maybe Aberdeen..... what's your guess?

Fantastic news - I'm glad to see the Flybe franchise is being used as its a well known brand here in the UK! The choice of routes will be crucial to success, as has been pointed out before, any reasonable airline can fill an a319 to Alicante on a summer afternoon so the northern european routes will have to be right and well publicised if Flybe/stobart air are to achieve a reasonable load factor on a flight at 7am in mid January to a business destination.
2x aircraft means up to 8 flights a day could potentially operate, so there is almost certainly going to be 2 routes flown a minimum of twice daily and then others which are daily or maybe 3/4 weekly as demand is less. I can certainly see it possible that Belfast City airport one of the routes as it is a major flybe base that has just lost its london link and flybe were getting healthy loads into gatwick so the competition from easyjet/aer lingus/BA to London wasn't affecting them badly.
Brussels is a good shout as it Copenhagen and obviously Munster. I think some other German desinations may be a possibility as well as Paris (either ORY or CDG) both of which have had a good flybe service for years. Time will tell but I would hope that there aren't many perculiar/ground breaking routes announced to start off with at least as I think safe routes with a proven demand will help estabilish the brand allowing a push into the more 'unknown' city pairings...
Obviously im just another arm chair CEO and would happily yield to other, more knowledgable membrs of this forum who may see the errors with my guesses!

I presume the flyBE franchise was the news you couldn't refer to last week, Expressflight? Are there any other possible developments (not looking a gift horse in the mouth)?

Yes, that was the news together with the yet to be announced route details of course.
I don't know of any other things in the pipeline, although there would seem to be plenty of scope for the Flybe SEN network to be expanded, perhaps from destinations already in the Flybe UK/European network. I think Andrew Tinkler said, when questioned on BBC Essex this morning, that the Flybe/Stobart Air agreement could result in routes not necessarily involving SEN as opportunities arose in future. He may have had CAX in mind of course, although that seems a long way off being achievable at present.
This vote of confidence by Flybe in SEN certainly won't do any harm in raising its profile in the eyes of other airlines looking to find cost effective London access.

Yes, it's a realistic decision by flyBE to check the demand from SEN without fully committing themselves. I felt that they missed a trick a few years ago when they could have been the big operator from SEN before EZY stepped in; that might have brought them a bit more money than some of their route decisions elsewhere......

This is great news and with two brand new ATR-72 600s to be based and six new routes, this is more than i had hoped for as a start up,would be nice to have the Belfast route back and Edinburgh both at a twice daily frequency (weekdays at least). Just wish we could solve the problem of early morning trains from London and late evening ones back to the Capital.

How much are Flybe interested in the potential of Southend and how much are they just interested in the franchise fee and increased brand awareness?
If they were really interested in Southend why not expand themselves?
Stobart are the 'driving force' here aren't they?
