Just seen a report dated 10/1/11 on News Az that their national carrier is, in the "near future" to announce routes from Baku to AMS & ABZ. Quotes a spokesman Maharrah Safarli.
I hope this is a true report, & that the name is genuine!
Certainly Baku is one the oil industry would love to see!

I hope they can get the oil industry to use them. But they will be up against it with a probable low frequency, and I don't know if Azerbaijan Airlines is in any major frequent flyer schemes. Somehow I think bmi, who are the only one-stop ABZ-Baku option (unless Air France and Azerbaijan Airlines interline), aren't going to be too worried here
Will certainly be an exotic airline for ABZ if it happens though.

Looks like a genuine Azerbaijan news website. Still plans are different from flights actually operating. So I would believe it when an Azerbaijan Airlines plane lands at ABZ

S11 flights for ABZ show a W, F & Su arrival to ABZ from GYD (Baku), on a 319. We'll see.

Seems an ambitious launch frequency if that is what happens. Would have expected once or twice weekly

Now slated for a May22 start, on a 2w frequency - W & Su. A319, 6hr flight!
On the ground at ABZ 0950-1110 local.
Can be booked on some systems apparently.
All we need is an official announcement!

Airport has been tweeted about the proposed Baku service. Not by me!
However they have replied, a bit to my surprise. They didn't deny it, but said it was an industry specific service, not yet on general sale & it was still in the planning stages.

Baku now appears on BAA Aberdeen's route map, but not on the list of destinations! Talk about a new route by stealth!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- edit: also now in the airline's booking engine, so looks like it will happen.

AZAL are showing on their website confirmation that they do intend to start ABZ flights. Now showing as 319s again. Think it's been up on their news page a few days.
