A very big congratulations to SEN - a sizeable commitment from Easyjet. I'll be honest while I didn't dismiss the rumours I was thinking along the lines of routes from existing bases such as Geneva first to 'test the water'
This announcement should also silence a lot of Southend's doubters. This is a significant commitment, especially as Easyjet are opening a base as opposed to nightstopping

A nice start for a nice new terminal... I think it will be a success and we could see the likes of LBA, LPL and DTV being connected with London via SEN in the future....

I'm not sure about the others, but iverpool is only a 2 1/2 hour train journey to euston so I doubt an air link woukld worek that well as by the time you've factored in the travel to the airport, check-in time and travel from southend to london you'd be better of getting the train directly from liverpool. BTw does anyone know how the train prices from southend compare to those from luton and stansted?

Serko, I suppose you are probably right, though LHR is a pain to get to from central London, though I suppose that has the connecting flights.

Don't think this has been picked up yet - TTG reports that as a consequence some STN routes wil switch to SEN
"McCall also said the budget airline would be axing several of its routes from Stansted as a result of the switch to Southend Airport. The company will reveal which routes have been shelved in July."

Seen from the passenger terminal windows by everyone there, lots of young people in front of the A319 carrying national flags and a place name with each flag 1 British flag with Belfast, 1 Dutch with Amsterdam, 3 Spanish with Alicante, Malaga and Palma so make of that what you will.

An Easyjet email gives the following destinations announced yesterday:
Alicante Malaga Palma Ibiza Barcelona Faro Amsterdam Belfast
Malaga is quite interesting at 1,700km distance off a 1,799m runway. No Berlin, Edinburgh, Glasgow or Madrid from movementman's list a few weeks ago - perhaps the two routes yet to be announced will be from among those destinations.
