I see that you can fly to Newark, NJ via Belfast on most days. The morning Belfast should allow plenty of time to connect with the Continental flight.... What are the transfer timings like to JFK via KLM Amsterdam?

From The Echo Website:
easyJet confirmed as Southend Airshow sponsor 11:10am Tuesday 21st February 2012 in
"easyJet has been confirmed as the main sponsor of the Southend Airshow.
The spectacular summer show is one of the jewels in the crown of Southend’s annual entertainment programme and the UK’s biggest airline has stepped in to provide much-needed cash.
The event, which attracts about 300,000 visitors to Southend, was funded by Southend Council last year and in 2010 it had no headline sponsor.
The event has been held annually on the late May bank holiday weekend for 26 years, but in recent years most of the £250,000 staging costs have fallen on the council – Maxims Casino was the last sponsor in 2009.
Now this year’s airshow will take place on Saturday 26 and Sunday May 27, a week before the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebration weekend which will kick-start a summer of events in Southend.
The event is two days packed full of barrel rolls, nosedives and loop-the-loops as the skies above Southend seafront become the focus for thousands of aviation fans.
Families flock to the seaside for displays including the world-famous Red Arrows, wingwalkers and a host of other planes, as well as music and other entertainment shows."

Easyjet's operation this Summer is likely to be heavily Summer seasonal. IBZ/PMI will almost certainly get axed for winter, and ALC/AGP/FAO/JER/BCN may see frequency reductions or winter cancelations as well. If GVA, the 'main' ski destination in the EZY network is only going to be 3xWeek then I doubt SEN will be getting many more, if any, ski flights from EZY. Which suggests to me three possible scenarios:
1. A lot of 'sitting about' at SEN this winter 2. Going down to 2 based aircraft 3. Launching new 'city' routes this winter with a 4th aircraft arriving for Summer 2013 to pick up the Summer seasonal services/frequencies
EZY's commitment to SEN would suggest the latter to me, but it will be interesting to see just what EZY do to replace/'deal with' the gaps caused by their Summer seasonal focus in the initial route network

I would like to think it is your third scenario also, but I can see the reduction to two based aircraft as a distinct possibility. Maybe the existing level of future bookings for the summer services will persuade EZY to launch new city routes such as Berlin, Prague, Munich, Warsaw, Rome, Budapest, Venice, Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen...... a lot of interesting winter city breaks there, and a lot of pax coming the other way to London I'd hope.....

I would suggest that they have chosen launch routes which they feel will give them not only decent yields in the first summer season, but which will also give them an good indication of the strength of the SEN market overall. They perhaps think that GVA at 3 x weekly is a safe bet, so have announced it now.
The actual potential for SEN is difficult to predict after such a long period without any scheduled service so they will no doubt need to be flexible in terms of both the routes served and even the size of the based fleet. Some of the destinations mentioned by Devonian would almost certainly be on the 'possibles' list and it will be interesting to see how cautious or adventurous their route selections turn out to be.
I should certainly like to see some routes which have the potential to generate a substantial amount of inbound traffic, which should be one of SEN's strengths. The present network is rather light in that regard, although that is understandable for the first season of operations from SEN.

A quick glance at the winter timetable seems to show:
ALC Tu, Th, Sat AMS double daily (Sat 1 x daily) BCN Su, M, Th, F BFS double daily (Sat 1 x daily) FAO Su, T, Th, Sat JER Su, M, F, S GVA not yet on sale, but reportedly Su, F, Sat
So that looks like 44 departures per week (at the moment).

I've just looked at the week commencing 7th Jan 2013. A couple of frequency notes for that week
AMS is 12xWeek not 13xWeek (no Wed morning service) BCN is 5xWeek not 4xWeek BFS is 11xWeek not 13xWeek (no Tue/Wed evening service) There is also Malaga 4xWeek
Certainly some gaps though for further new routes and it seems the base will remain at 3 aircraft

Thanks for those corrections Humberside. I looked at mid-November and also was just going out on the town (well, Sheringham anyway) so may have overlooked those points. I didn't check Malaga as SEN didn't mention it as being in the Winter schedule so I assumed it had been dropped.
I would say it's quite encouraging while still leaving a few gaps to fill, which might prove interesting.
Edit: In November there is a Wednesday morning AMS and also Tuesday & Wednesday evening BFS services, so it must change in January as you say.

That week in January is probably one of the quietest of the year for travel, being immediately after Christmas/New Year

Everything going pear shaped for easyJet at SEN today, thanks to French ATC. The Barcelona flight delayed 4 hours, the Amsterdam flight cancelled........ what a PR disaster, and none of their own making.

I wouldn't quite call it a PR disaster - just one of those things and no doubt other services on the EZY network will also suffer cancellations today.

To try and put it into some perspective, Ryanair are saying that yesterday they cancelled 134 flights, delayed 450 flights, and 88,000 passengers had their travel plans disrupted. They are demanding the EU makes strikes by ATC illegal.
Even so, a real disappointment for those involved in getting the SEN operation up and running
