It is fatuous for BA and Virgin to argue that people fly from Heathrow and Gatwick out of choice. The facts are that they fly out of those two airports because there is no other choice. A couple of years back I flew to Tobago from Gatwick because it was the only choice - what a trek to Gatwick from the North of England - couldn't even get a flight from Manchester, which is also a bad enough journey to get to.

Thats not what they're saying though, what they are trying to say is that not enough passengers could be generated in the regions, and therefor the regions can not be a substitute for capacity increases in the South East. They talk of foreign Governments who aren't interested unless they are talking Heathrow.
I dont think they are saying regional airports are not important, but I think its a much needed voice of the major airlines to stop all of this supposition by politicians and regional airports.
