I see that BAW761 OSLO-LHR diverted into SEN this AM. Must be the first time BAW mainline has sent a LHR diverted passenger flight into SEN for a long time. Any idea when the last would have been (BEA/BOAC)?

I was just wondering that myself. I recall that a B732 on lease from Britannia arrived one evening many years ago, probably late 60s, as a snow diversion I think it was. I don't know if that was a pax or freight flight.

There were eleven BA shorthaul diversions from LHR on 5 Feb, distributed between STN (4), BOH (3), BHX (3) and SEN (1). Plus four longhaul diversions to CWL . Information from thebasource.com/. Its a good example of BA policy of spreading the load among multiple airports when appropriate. These all would have been fuel-and-go diversions, (i..e. no passenger/baggage offload) so BA Ops Control would have needed to determine each airport's capacity on the day to provide an efficient turn round. SEN probably qualified because a Wednesday in mid-winter is typically quiet and there were no LCY weather diversions to complicate the picture. Now that BA Mainline has discovered SEN perhaps one might expect the occasional similar diversion in future. The issue seemed to be long landing delays caused by the lower landing rates required by the LHR LVPs which come into force when RVR drops below 600m.

About 30 years ago there was a report of a BA B757 diverting into SEN. The story was that it was a day of severe weather in Southern UK. The 757 made two approaches to LHR both of which were abandoned due not only to the turbulence but to hugely erroneous INS winds being displayed on finals - 200 knots ! The decision was made to divert to STN, but long landing delays were encountered there because of the weather conditions and hence the plan was changed to SEN.
This account appeared in the regular CHIRP publication, CHIRP being the Confidential Human Factors Incident Reporting Programme. I recall that the crew who had submitted the report anonymously were invited to contact CAA to provide further information, which was an unusual request. .
I estimate this was about 1990-92. I had no contact with SEN in those days so I did not follow it up. Did a BA 757 diversion to SEN really happen, or did the story become distorted prior to publication ?

Unfortunately the 2 CFE LCY diversions tonight (due TS activity at LCY?) chose to divert to STN. I wonder if the phones weren't answered at SEN, or do we think this denotes a sea-change for diversions to now go to Stansted in preference, as so much spare capacity available everywhere. I can't see much being picked up by SEN this winter if it is the latter. That would be a shame if you read the NOTAMs for LCY ILS being partially/fully U/S over the next 2.5 months:

Relieved to see the KL983 E190 (PH-EZG) diverting to SEN after 3 tailwind approaches at LCY. At least the 'Flying Dutchmen' know the airport.

Presumably the ILS antenna renewal work at LCY meant no ILS on 27 this morning.

CFE/BA8739 E170 G-LCYH GLA-LCY shortly to land at SEN. Will CFE8MS/BA8703 E190 EDI-LCY G-LCYO follow? No - after 10 holds it managed to complete a visual approch to runway 27 at LCY.

KLM987 diverting in (AMS-LCY) PH-EZK E190, & now CFE/BA8739 (GLA-LCY) G-LCYI E170. It looks like SEN couldn't accept the EDI to LCY though, probably due to stands clogged with stored acft, or low staffing. The CFE/BA8472 (FR-LCY) also now going to LGW. #missedopportunity

Shame that KL983 AMS-LCY had to divert to NWI this morning, due SEN terminal being closed. Unfortunately they'll probably give up trying to use SEN as an alternate at this rate, as you wan't somewhere that is likely to be available when you need it.

Again KL987 AMS-LCY diverting to NWI this morning. A few extra prop/GA flights flights this PM however.
