Centrica have given an interview to The Daily Telegraph on their plans for the conversion of the Rough Field to a hydrogen storage facility. They are awaiting clarification of the government's hydrogen policy including details of subsidy guarantees which would assist in developing hydrogen as a widely used fuel. The Rough Field methane storage facility is being closed down and could be converted to hydrogen by 2025/2026. The scheme would cost £1.6bn and employ three to four thousand people during the construction phase. This could ensure that Centrica Rough remains on the Humberside departures board for many years.

The Daily Telegraph today reports that the Government are in talks with Centrica about re-opening the Rough storage facity for natural gas storage. It would subsequently be used for storing hydrogen when it becomes a widely-used fuel in the 2030's.

Centrica has been awarded an initial licence to start the process of re-opening Rough for gas storage. It sounds like the current situation in Ukraine and resulting energy crisis has made it financially viable.
