Rumours on another site are that Stobart/Flybe next route could be a twice daily service to Manchester, have to wait and see on that one.

There's a bit of confusion as to whether it is Flybe or Stobart Air that has applied for it, but I would imagine its the latter. Details seem to be 16x weekly flights using a SEN based E195, 3x daily: Monday, Friday; 2x daily: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday. Very precise for a rumour it would seem.
I had a feeling that the higher frequency routes were yet to be announced, as under the original WX plan it was 18 destinations served using 4 aircraft. If that plan remains the same with BE then 12 routes with 2 aircraft leaves 6 routes with 2 aircraft to be announced, so therefore presumably higher frequencies for those 6 remaining destinations. Also the first tranche of routes in my opinion have been marketed as more holiday/city break routes, not business orientated. Maybe some more business orientated routes to come (e.g. DUB, EDI, GLA etc). Also, unless the job adverts are incorrect they plan on basing an E195 at DUB. Could that be to operate early flights into SEN like EIR did before? Just my guess...

I see no gain in this route for Stobart or Flybe, Southend has no business connections to Manchester and the City is no nearer with plane + train, than train into Euston + tube to the city. This would need to be priced very reasonably to achive Pax Numbers and profit for twice daily routes.

If I was to travel by train from Southend to Manchester via Euston it would take a little over 4 hours. By plane, it would take 45 minutes to get to SEN and through the terminal, and then a 1 hour long flight, and then another 30 minutes after landing to the city centre. So realistically SEN-MAN is quicker for some than getting the train, and if priced competitively it could work. Whether there is enough demand remains to be seen.

I doubt it. The Edinburgh flight would work though, providing the timings were correct. Southend has RBS as a major employer with its Commercial Card Division based at Strawberry Field so a link to RBS' HQ would seem to make business sense.

If the SEN-MAN route becomes a reality it will certainly offer the benefit of worldwide connections via the various code share arrangements that Flybe can offer, although I doubt that this would form a very large part of the traffic mix. Whether there is sufficient demand for point to point traffic to fill the capacity that will be on offer must be debatable. Of course one of the reasons for Stobart launching these new SEN routes is to prove that such routes are viable with the aim of attracting other airlines to SEN in the future.
I think we shall see a considerable difference in demand on many of the routes announced so far but really the only way to truly establish the viability of any route still remains to actually run it and see what happens.

Flybe have been operating a Southampton-Manchester schedule for many years now with six rotations per weekday(5 x Q400, 1 x E195) so evidently it is successful. Could this have influenced Stobart Air into considering this route for SEN ? Plus of course there are no competing services from the other London area airports other than LHR. But I would have thought an ATR would be better entry level equipment than an E195.
Will there really be much demand for longhaul connections over SEN-MAN ? Easier I would have thought for passengers in south east England to travel via LHR or LGW. Though apparently USA pre-clearance is under negotiation for MAN so this might offer some appeal if it comes about.
