Stobart Group says that scheduled passenger flights from Carlisle Airport are getting closer.
Carlisle City Council confirmed planning consent for a redevelopment of the airport in August.
Reporting half-year results today, Stobart, which owns the airport, said it had started a “business planning exercise” in readiness for passenger services.
The report said: “Planning permission has been secured for the development of the airport and we have commenced a business planning exercise designed to attract airlines, passengers and related operations.
“In particular, we are considering a London service and a Dublin route connecting to transatlantic destinations.”
Stobart, which sold a controlling stake in the Eddie Stobart haulage business earlier this year, reported a loss of £8.6 million before tax from continuing operations in the six months to August.
But it says the loss was mainly due to £8.1m finance charges related to debt repayment.
Underlying profit, which is a better indication of the how the business is performing, jumped 110 per cent to £4.4m.
Turnover was 17 per cent higher at £56.2m.
The accounts also reveal that executive directors Andrew Tinkler, Ben Whawell and Richard Butcher each received cash bonuses of £309,000 plus shares worth £292,000 to recognise their “exceptional performance”.
A new directors’ remuneration policy and incentive plan is due to be considered at a shareholders’ general meeting tomorrow.
