Press Release on the airport website regarding a meeting today. I assume this is by invitation only, so hope there will be an impartial update from some of the attendees. www.southendairport.com/pages/press.htm

The Scoping Report produced for LSACL provides clearer information as to the likely declared distances expected to result from the planned runway extension.
The runway would be extended by approximately 300m and the surface would be grooved asphalt - at present it comprises an asphalt friction course surface. The RESA at the north-east end would be increased from 90m to 150m and that at the south-west end would be 240m, as at present. The 300m wide Runway Strip will be extended to the south-west and would be approximately 1,720m in length with demolition of the cottages leaving just the church within the Runway Strip itself, but outside the required cleared strip width. The 180m or so of existing runway which extends north-east from the Runway Strip (the 24 undershoot) would contain the enlarged RESA but, I assume, could still be used for commencement of take-offs on 24 as at present. This results in LDAs of approximately 1,600m on both runways and TODAs of approximately 1,800m, the maximum (in theory) for a Code 3C runway. The backtrack distance for take-offs on 06 will be quite substantial at 650m or so, although traffic levels are unlikely to be so great as for that to present a problem. I would stress that these are not official figures but just my estimates.
These distances would be very similar to those at SOU but are sufficiently modest to preclude the economical commercial operation of larger freighters for example, which seems to be the fear of many local residents.

Latest Evening Echo article paints a bleak picture in some ways, but rather more optomistic in thye longer term perhaps....?
THE expansion at Southend Airport may not be completed in time for the 2012 Olympics, worried councillors have revealed.
Councillors will not even begin looking at the results of the public consultation about the plans until the autumn.
A decision by both Southend and Rochford District Council on the results of the Joint Area Action Plan for the airport was originally expected before the summer recess in August.
But the massive amount of public response to the consultation has meant delays before there is any chance of a policy being put in place.
Southend Council leader Nigel Holdcroft said: “There have been delays particularly in Rochford with getting together all the responses. There certainly won’t be any further developments before the autumn.”
Privately, council sources are admitting the amount of opposition in Leigh and Eastwood to airport expansion and the extension of the runway and diversion of Eastwoodbury Lane is a major problem politically to the Tories whose majority on the council has reduced in recent years.
A source said: “If a decision can be put off until after the general election which is likely to be the same day as the local election in May next year, then there is a good chance the Conservatives will have a big majority and be able to go through with the expansion scheme.”
Keith Hudson, Rochford district councillor responsible for planning, said: “About 2,000 people sent comments in writing rather than electronically and these have all to be put into the system manually.”
Sources at Rochford Council say the council is still firmly committed to the airport and the jobs which could be brought into the area by the expansion.
An insider said: “Delays are unfortunate, especially with the clock ticking down to the 2012 Olympics, but we remain confident we will be able to have everything in place by then.”
No one from the airport was available to comment yesterday.
Alastair Welch, airport managing director, said he was not surprised there was going to be a delay in the local authorities making any decision on the joint area action plan because the consultation period had been extended from early April to mid May.
He added: “The plan covers many complex, interwoven topics and we would hope the local councils would fully consider the responses they have had to their recent consultation exercise.
“We continue to focus on the development of the local airport in time to support the Olympics in 2012.”

Advertising this in the local papers. As I understand it, they will be having a stand in Leigh (the Stables, Chalkwell Park Drive) 4-8 pm on Monday13th, Rochford Freight House 4-8pm Tuesday14th, Airport Thursday16th 6-8pm, Airport Thursday23rd 3-8pm, Airport Thursday30th 3-8pm, Airport Thursday6th 3-8pm. It says that you can talk to the (airport) team. I expect this means a (hired in) spokesman, plus an airport representative.

The www.flysouthend2012.com website has been updated and is a great improvement as it now states very specific facts regarding just what the planned expansion will mean to residents. It mentions that the site for the planned new control tower has been changed after consultations with the Environment Agency, although it doesn't say exactly where the new location will be. I hope the website can be given sufficient publicity to enable as many residents as possible to find it.

The new tower is likely to be positioned on the Eastern boundary opposite the station.

Tarquin
I wonder why that wasn't the initial choice for its location rather than a remote northern location adjacent to the fuel farm. Provided there is a sight line to the new 06 threshold, it would appear a more convenient location whereby flight planning and met facilities could be co-located at the base of the tower. Is the planned height still around 40 metres?
