A NORTH Lincolnshire nurse stepped in for extra duty when a woman suffered a heart attack on a flight home from Gran Canaria.
Yvonne Grant (50), a health visitor for NHS North Lincolnshire, answered the call for a trained nurse or doctor when the 43-year-old woman was taken ill 45 minutes before the plane was due to land at Humberside Airport.
She said: "They called for either a doctor or a nurse so I went up there and sat with the person. "I advised the cabin crew to get the plane down as soon as possible because the person needed to go to hospital."
The plane was diverted to Manchester Airport, from where the casualty was taken to Wythenshawe Hospital by North West Ambulance service at around 11.50pm on Saturday.
Mrs Grant praised the efforts of cabin crew on the Thomas Cook flight, describing them as 'fantastic'. And she said if a similar situation arose again, she would have no hesitation in lending a hand.
