As it is coming up to 75 years since the official opening of the Southend Municipal airport, how about our own thread for any historical snippets/information about the airport? I see the airport are asking for any unusual photographs to borrow for an exhibition in the terminal in September: southendairport.com/PDFs/Airport%20launches%20exhibition%20web.pdf

Well, I hope they can trace the copyright holder of this Air Britain photo of a Channel AW Viking skimming the roof of an Eastern National bus as it crosses the fence. Why does SEN need a runway extension? A picture is better than a thousand words....... www.abpic.co.uk/photo/1048884/

Here's a film bringing back many memories of Southend in the early 1960s. Only 40 seconds on the airport, but what wonderful forty seconds! An LTU Viking, and then a low pass across the apron with Freighters, a Rapide, a Heron and a Prentice (in a dreadful green paint scheme): www.eafa.org.uk/catalogue/7641Who knows where the time goes......?

Nice find KU. (no, not the old thread!). All those bandits now long gone. The routes, in a more optimistic environment could all still work, I think. The Rotterdam route might have better synergies now than then, with the London Gateway port not too far away for ships crews etc.
