I see that the airport has got the money for the M18 link road. on Calanedar an airport spokesperson reported only that it was good news as it will help in any future cargo developments, easier for large transport to access th airport.

The original cost was stated to be £103 million so where is the rest coming from?

Now estimated to be £170 million. They claim its coming from the private sector. I suppose with the Rossington Colliery regeneration and the proposed inland port, along with Peel, then that could be where the money is coming from? Though it certainly rests on those involved committing to the project it seems.
Just to put it into perspective a bit, the £170 million would build DSA twice over. The only benefit to Peel/VAS that I can see would be to the land bank, afterall have they not just applied for permission to build a number of dwellings, and permission to diversify their business park into non-aviation related industry?

I understand permission has been granted. The increasing value of the"land-bank" is the key, it seems, to everything down Finningley way.

Yes, in fact I struggle to see what difference it will make to the airlines. It may make it easier of use for passengers arriving from the south, but still only brings it closer to EMA too!!

Thats what they said they were going armed with last week.
I.wonder if DSA features in the new bmi regional plans. 'connecting the uk regions to Europe' they say..

The Sheffield City Region has given DSA significant backing, as the region's airport. Yet the lack of any realistic air connections with near European, let alone internal destinations, is causing some concern to members of the business community who were promised'better services'.This problem needs addressing as FARRRS will do nothing at all , for that important market, if there are no services to these places.

Thousands of new jobs and homes can now be delivered after a major road was given the go-ahead in Doncaster.
The government has given the green light to the final stage for the £56 million Finningley and Rossington Regeneration Route Scheme, which means work on the new road – linking the M18 to Robin Hood Airport – can begin.
Steve Gill, managing director at Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield, said: “We are delighted by the news the development of the FARRRS link road has taken another step forward.
“This road will be a huge improvement to the accessibility of the airport, opening us up to the Sheffield city region and cutting journey times from Sheffield to 25 minutes.
“Improved access will enable the airport to attract larger numbers of passengers and work towards the ambitions set out in our master plan.
“For us, this is very much a first phase and part one of our longer-term aspirations to make the airport more accessible to the Sheffield city region and beyond.”
The new link road, which it is hoped will help drive inward investment, can go ahead after Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin granted Doncaster Council the powers to purchase the land needed to build the scheme and carry out the necessary work to public and private rights of way.
With this in place, the council can now plan for the start of the main construction works – which are due to begin in October and take two years to complete – as well as create the new connection from Junction 3 of the M18 to the south of Doncaster, serving the recently upgraded A6182 White Rose Way into the town centre.
Ros Jones, Doncaster elected mayor, said: “It is wonderful news that work on this widely supported regeneration scheme is about to start.
“This key infrastructure project will transform the south of Doncaster by dramatically improving access and seeing major private sector developments get off the ground.
“It will be the catalyst for economic growth right across the borough and the Sheffield City Region helping to create significant numbers of new jobs and homes.
“With the improvements along White Rose Way recently completed and six projects recognised by the Sheffield city region local enterprise partnership as regional investment priorities, we are developing the right conditions to attract new investment and companies to Doncaster. The borough has a bright future to look forward to.”
The project, with backing from the Government’s Regional Growth Fund, is predicted to help regenerate Rossington, cut journey times, ease congestion, support further growth at Doncaster’s international airport and provide the necessary road infrastructure for major private sector investments, including the Inland Port development and the re-development of the former colliery site at Rossington.
FARRRS is a public/private sector partnership led by the council, with partners including the airport and the Peel Group, an infrastructure, transport and real estate investment company.
Peel Investments (North), part of the Peel Group, has this week been granted permission to develop a business part near the airport, which could create up to 1,700 jobs, although the firm said work would not begin until FARRRS was in place.

This is good news for Doncaster and especially to Rossington, where the existing "lack" of road connections and a busy level crossing is a real hindrance to regenerating the once thriving coalfield community. When built, FARRRS will terminate at Parrot's Corner, leaving a couple of miles of existing roads to be negotiated before DSA is reached. ( This fact has largely been ignored by the Airport in its many statements concerning the "bright " future the road scheme will bring to the Airport.) I remain sceptical that the Airport will be accessible in 25 minutes from Sheffield unless it is at an hour when the Sheffield Parkway, M1 and M18 are unusually quiet and the intended traveller wants to reach the airport from Sheffield's now disused airport ( about as near Doncaster as you can get from Sheffield) Only time will tell if airlines will flock to DSA and start services...If they do, then that will have been yet another tranche of public funding to have been spent assisting a company whose ultimate ownership resides in the tax-haven of the Isle of Man!
