ABZ used to be RAF Dyce in the 40s/50s, & it is still a diversion airport for them when required.
ABZ is used to trade from the RAF, with overshoots by Tornados & Nimrods a regular ocurrence.
More recently though, ABZ played host to a couple of interesting RAF movements.
In May an RAF C17 (Globemaster III) landed at ABZ, repatriating a soldier from Afghanistan on compassionate grounds. There is a vid on Youtube, as someone was there in the rain filming it! (Not me, before you ask - I was holidaying in Perthshire!!).
Then, a few days later, a VC10 landed to transport a heart down to London for a transplant operation. It was, to my knowledge, a first visit from a VC10 since 1984! There are photos of it on the Plane Mad website in the Aberdeen section (credit to Gary Stewart, who also has photos of the Globemaster).
Plus earlier this year, a Nimrod actually landed at the airport, as it had to refuel on route RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus en route to Kinloss. Stronger then forecast headwinds meant the crew diverted into Aberdeen as a precaution.
