167 men died 20yrs ago today when at 9.56pm the Piper Alpha oil platform was rocked by a series of explosions sparked by a gas leak.
The platform was torn asunder by the explosions & the subsequent fires.
A massive rescue effort was undertaken by the RAF, supported by commercial helis, ships (military & oil support vessels in the area).
I can recall the helis landing at the hospital helipad with the injured, but there weren't many.
61 people survived.
Memorial services being held today in Aberdeen & offshore.
Occidental, operators at the time of Piper Alpha, withdrew from the N.Sea soon after.
RIP to those that lost their lives.
