Although unattractive - There is always the option of a refuelling stop.
In the late 90s I flew HUY-TFS with Spanair and we needed to land in Santander for fuel on the outbound leg (but not on the inbound?). Never to this day know why, as the MD83 could easily have reach TFS on one tank, and the stop made us about 45 minutes late into TFS.

The problem with re-fuelling stops is that there must be a greater overall consumption of fuel. Together with the expense associated with the longer hours, the total cost of the flight must be greater than that of a direct journey.

I notice TCX still haven't put Majorca on sale for Summer 14, despite it appearing in the S14 preview holiday brochures. Anybody hazard a guess at what the hold up could be?

It'll be interesting to see who gets the HAT/Jetxtra/Lowcostholidays charter contract for 2014 flights especially if they intend to add a route beyond range of the 717. Many factors to consider including reliability and opportunity for good departure times that suit holiday makers. Price must be the main one though - we're all turned on by cheap flights. Just see how the public put up with being insulted by Ryanair's boss and how we tolerate the low quality service offered by the others.
Maybe we'll see more than one airline on the routes - should know fairly soon.

Picking up hints that Volotea might well not be the airline used for the 2014 HAT/Lowcostholidays/Jetxtra charter flights.

With such low load factors would it be wise to change to a larger aircraft without the backing of a big name operator?

With such low load factors would it be wise to change to a larger aircraft without the backing of a big name operator? Very risky. Volotea are not the best operator for these flights though. Their bases are in the wrong place, and the Aircraft range restrictive. Changing to an operator with larger ac (thinking A320/737 size) would open up new possible destinations in the Canaries and Greece that are currently out of range. I look forward to Julys stats to see if the load factors are improving as the flights become established. If they do stick with Volotea, which wouldn't be a bad move, and the safest bet, then it may mean flights have to come in from Palma more often, and the only way that could work is if TCX (or another big player) take seats. Operating Palma to Humberside say 3 times a week (with TCX taking seats) would only be around a 20% increase in capacity on Summer 13, then operating a W into Alicante, Malaga, and perhaps Faro or Menorca, I think would work well, and probably not be too much to soon?

To be honest personally I'd rather see Thomas Cook and lowcostholidays/jetXtra being mutually exclusive. I was more referring to the possibility of the likes of Cosmos increasing their capacity.
I find it a shame that Olympic have pulled out of HUY, their flights always appeared popular, and their services to LCA and HER are greatly missed.

I agree, TCX operating their own flights is much better and securer for the airport too. The only other reason I can think that Palma is not on sale yet (Apart from the unthinkable!), is that they are chartering a new carrier for the flights following the near collapse of Orbest earlier this year. As things stand currently, Majorca is a glaring gap in the routes on sale.
Summer 14 on sale so far...
Friday: Dalaman (Freebird A320) & Tunisia (Nouvelair A320) Sunday: Bulgaria (Balkan Holidays A320)

TCX are however using Orbest for other flights next year? I understand Orbest restructured under the Portuguese company and are now trading as normal.
I wonder if they could possibly be waiting for JetXtra/HAT news before they commit to anything - even if its to try and create a 10/11 night duration which are becoming increasingly more popular than 7 or 14 nights.

According to my friend who works in Thomas Cook Res , the last upgrade and re launch of next years flights has now been done as is on line , from about 2 weeks ago . What you see is whats on sale and unlikely to be adding anything else now so Palma could well be off the menu which would be a massive blow . fingers crossed

The Thomas Cook flights for this year weren't confirmed until September 2012, so it may still be a bit early yet. All planned departures may be loaded, but that is not to say things cant change.
