Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield has made a number of senior appointments as it looks to further grow all aspects of the Airport’s business.
Firstly Mike Morton has joined owners, The Peel Airports Group and takes charge of the UK’s newest commercial airport with immediate effect as Airport Director.
Mike was previously Operations Director at Coventry Airport - a position he held since 2005. Although qualified as a mining engineer and 21 years working as a coal miner, he has more recently enjoyed a varied career with a number of companies in the aviation industry, gaining 12 years of considerable experience working in ground handling, air cargo, airline and latterly the airport business.
Mike joins Doncaster Sheffield Airport at an important time in the Airport’s development and is under no illusions over the challenging times ahead not just for the Airport but the industry as a whole. He is however confident that Robin Hood Airport is well positioned to capitalise on the many opportunities available to one of the UK’s fastest growing regional airports.
Mike commented, “I am determined that we put this airport in a position to always be looking for improved efficiencies in order to be as competitive as possible. At the same time however, looking for greater opportunities, not only in the passenger business where we have made tremendous progress in just three years of operations, but also in the freight market, Business and General Aviation sectors.”
In the short space of time I have been here, I have already realised what a tremendous asset this Airport is for people in Doncaster, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. It brings the region’s passengers all the hassle free benefits of a modern regional airport with parking outside of the terminal, good public transport links and none of the delays and queues associated with larger airports.”
The appointment follows a restructuring of the Peel Airports Group with Mike Morton reporting to Hugh Lang, formerly Managing Director at one of Peel’s other airports, Durham Tees Valley Airport, who has recently become Group Airports Director.
Joining Mike and based at Doncaster Sheffield Airport is Peel Airport’s new Aviation Sales Director, Nick Smillie who will be responsible for growing the passenger business and giving the region’s travellers greater opportunities to fly from their local Airport. Nick joins after 4 years promoting business investment in South Yorkshire, having worked for Creative Sheffield and as Senior Business Development Manager for the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham, attracting major international organisations to Yorkshire Forward’s flagship economic development project.
Nick brings a wealth of international sales experience to the business along with an excellent awareness and working knowledge of the region as a whole and recognises what a tremendous asset Doncaster Sheffield Airport is for South Yorkshire.
Nick commented, “I firmly believe that by highlighting to potential airlines the combination of the Airport’s high quality facilities and the strengths of the major city region it serves, we can create a compelling case for airlines covering all markets of the passenger business to consider operating from here.”
“Owners Peel Airports have invested around £150 million in the Airport with some of the best facilities in the business with few restrictions for operators. Much will be carried out in the coming weeks and months to communicate what’s on offer to airlines and passengers and to highlight what great opportunities Robin Hood Airport provides.”
Finally, the third addition to the senior management of the Peel Airports Group is Paul Rodwell, who joins the company as Cargo Director. Paul has over 30 years of experience in international transport having held senior management positions in both shipping and airline companies. He joins from James Fisher and Sons Plc where he was a Director of James Fisher Everard a leading UK shipping company.
Like Nick, Paul believes Doncaster Sheffield Airport is well placed to capitalise on opportunities in this important sector of the aviation industry.
Paul commented “This is an ideal period for the Airport which is in a position to facilitate and develop its unique assets. Its Central UK location, the proximity of the motorway network, east coast main line and the Humber ports, open up substantial multimodal prospects.”
“With up to 75% of UK exporters and importers within 3 hours truck time from the Airport I believe there are tremendous prospects for freight growth here.”
