Well respected and longest serving North Lincolnshire councillor dies
It is with great sadness that the council announces the death of Cllr Ted Appleyard.
Cllr Appleyard was 91 years old and died last night in hospital.
Cllr Appleyard was a Conservative councillor serving the Barton upon Humber ward. He was the longest serving member on North Lincolnshire Council, having represented Barton residents for almost 50 years.
By leader of North Lincolnshire Council, Cllr Mark Kirk:
“This is a very sad time for all of us. Ted was the longest serving councillor on both Barton Town and North Lincolnshire Council serving the people he cared about for 48 years. He worked tirelessly for those he represented and was a real character. We will all miss him.
“I have many fond memories of Ted telling me stories of his sea adventure days and how he loved to catch the ferry to Hull from New Holland to go to County Hall.
“Ted always had a great love for Humberside Airport and was a director on the Humberside Airport Board a few years ago.
“He was a regular visitor to the former Proudfoot store in Barton and loved their pies. In fact he visited that often that they named one of their pies after him – Ted Appleyard’s steak pie!
“I also remember when Ted made beautiful Christmas wreaths and he donated some to local charities.
“I could go on. Ted was a remarkable person who I will always remember.”
By leader of the Conservative Group, Cllr Liz Redfern:
“Ted entered politics to make a difference and he did so in his own unique way. He was a loyal and experienced member.
”Everyone knew Ted, so if there was any query and concern people would just say ‘ask Ted’. He very much enjoyed being involved in the community and brought his own uniqueness to his role.
”If I could sum up Ted in two words – it would be that he was a nice man. Personally I shall always remember him for his wry chuckle, particularly when in the cut and thrust of debate. He could always brighten up your day and would often bring a posy of flowers, as he would say, to make your day even better. How much he will be missed.”
