In the summer 2023 thread, Pug suggests that HUY could aspire to be as successful as Norwich, Exeter or Bournemouth. Their financial results are compared here, together with those of one or two other regional airports and a London airport. The year selected is ending 31st March 2020 (29th February for Southend) to avoid a large Covid 19 effect.
Turnover Operating Expenses Operating profit £m
Southend £37.1 (£42.7) (£5.6) Exeter £24.2 (£22.6) £1.6 Bournemouth £16.7 (£15.0) £1.7 Norwich £13.7 (£12.0) £1.7 Doncaster £11.7 (£19.1) (£7.4) Humberside £8.8 (£8.6) £0.2
The Southend Operating expenses figure seems very high : perhaps it includes some route development costs. Doncaster by comparison has very low turnover; probably for the same reason.
Passenger and freight totals for 2019 and turnover generated per passenger.
Southend 2,142,000 0 £17.33 Exeter 953,000 0 £25.44 Bournemouth 808,000 0 £20.67 Norwich 504,000 257 tons £27.20 Doncaster 1,287,000 17,647 tons £9.10 Humberside 190,000 117 tons £46.50
Annual Transport Movements and turnover generated by each one.
Southend 20,108 £1,846 Exeter 14,433 £1,680 Bournemouth 4,992 £3,346 Norwich 19,536 £702 Doncaster 11,569 £1,012 Humberside 6,870 £1,286

Fascinating stuff
Operating profit per passenger
DSA £1.73 loss Southend £1.28 loss Norwich £0.29 profit Bournemouth £0.47 profit Exeter £0.59 profit Humberside £0.95 profit
Is there something around right sizing operations here? Huy is perhaps staffed for the right sized planes, spread evenly through the day - whereas Southend and dsa are staffed for lots of flights leaving in the first wave with very little for another 8 hours?

I get the distinct impression HUY is staffed according to it's regular business: -The standard fire category is 6. 7 and 8 is available by arrangement only. Embraer 175/190's are fire cat 6. B737-800's are fire cat 7. Seemingly based around the needs of KLM as the operator of the largest aircraft into HUY most days - will accommodate larger aircraft but only if pre-arranged -During the COVID recovery, airport opening hours only increased in line with Eastern and KLM flying.
