Now the harder bits- an operator to off-load most of the rental costs onto. An operator that will also organise and contribute to start up cost, attract airlines and get a return for their investment.
Surely, whatever the Council have agreed with Peel is contingent on such an operator signing on the dotted line!

Surely, whatever the Council have agreed with Peel is contingent on such an operator signing on the dotted line! Absolutely. I would put money on it closing again within ten years should it be successful in actually reopening. One thing is for sure this time though, it will also put HUY in a perilous position with regards to passenger services. There’s a very real risk of losing both. Ros Jones on Calendar just now was nothing short of an embarrassment, particularly when asked why it’s a good use of public sector investment considering it was always loss making under previous, all she could say was how it’s an economic generator. How many times does it need to be relayed to these people, airports themselves are not major economic generators, they reflect the economy of the regions they serve. The reason HUY survives is because it has a niche, itself is not a major economic generator it is merely a facilitator to the nature of the core business in the Humber region. EMA is seeing hundreds of millions being invested, as is LBA. MAN is going for the kill. I’m awaiting with interest to see who the operator is going to be and under what terms they will be employed. Let’s not forget that there is an election very soon and this announcement has been made just a couple of days before purdah.

Post on one of the "save dsa" Facebook sites gives some outline profile details of who the poster says is the preferred operator. If correct it doesn't read like they are a big players. A European operator with relationships with a small number of airlines - Iberia, Vueling, Wizz and Easyjet. Reviving DSA will need an operator with big funds and extensive aviation contacts.

There has been a suggestion that the Council offer to cover the lease for a period of five years. The initial OBC suggested up to 24 months. I’m not sure how informed the person you refer to is in the whole thing, suspect it’s a case of a little bit of knowledge. This person did make a good point though, airports are capital intensive and if the responsibility for continued investment rests on the appointed operator then they will undoubtably have interest in Peels Gateway East development. Is this part of the agreement? Remains to be seen as we do not know enough right now. What we do know is that purdah starts this weekend ahead of local elections so it’s the perfect opportunity for the Mayor to gain political capital in making such an announcement.
