NORTH Lincolnshire residents are flocking to escape the freezing weather and instead, take in some winter sun. As the region continues to shiver, the temptation to escape to the beach has proved too much for many to resist.
Humberside Airport's business manager, Amanda George, said bookings over the past few days were double the daily average for last month. She said: "January is a busy month for bookings anyway but compared to the December figures, we are 100 per cent up. "One of the top winter destinations is Dubai and we are booking these one every other day for people wanting to get away in the next six weeks."
Ms George said the location of Humberside Airport was proving to be an advantage during the cold snap. She said: "The Amsterdam service from here is really popular. "In this weather, a lot of people are not prepared to travel over the M62 or the M1 so people are going for the KLM connections. "It is a short trip to Amsterdam and then there are 800 connections worldwide."
Bookings at the airport have been boosted by the news that a new summer route to Malaga will be launched from Saturday, May 29. The route will be operated by Flybe every Saturday until September 11.
