Iceland! No dates revealed yet but must be winter 23? Yes, not the most exciting news. Think they’ve been a bit mischievous as their social media feed attracted a surprising number of comments!

The details of the new offering are still very sparse.
If there is to be no increase from TUI, HAT could surely organise some charters, possibly utilising the Eastern E190.

Im sure they could arrange something with the E190, even if it just operated a weekly flight to Alicante and Malaga on a Saturday or Sunday when easterns core network are quieter, during the peak summer season, selling a mixture of seat only and packages through HAT, but then I have been saying that for years!
Turns out the Iceland is a one off departure on 30th November 2023, a 4 night break for £1865 pp, (which is about what I usually pay for 7 nights for a family of 4, but I guess its a very different market!) operating via Teeside. Certainly a long way from the TUI base hoped for! I have added it to the one off departures 2023 thread

If nothing emerges in the next week or so it really does look like summer 2023 holiday routes will show no growth despite the closure of nearest competitor, DSA. Even if DSA is sold the new owners will face challenges that cannot be speedily over-come - e.g labour shortages, re- building customer base, new operator relationships etc. 2023 should represent opportunity in some form for HUY. Interesting to see if that involves holiday charters.

Todays on-line edition of Grimsby Telegraph carrying another article reflecting the comments made on social media encouraging Humberside airport to take-on routes lost to the area with closure of DSA. No comment from airport management reported. Good that local media are taking an interest, hope they can get airport management to at least respond. Article headed "Jet2 to Malaga...."

I did actually contact the commercial team at HUY regarding the online appetite for more flights following the Iceland announcement, and they replied as follows;
“Many thanks for your most recent message regarding new routes for Humberside Airport.
As mentioned in our previous reply to an enquiry you made in the Summer regarding Tui routes, we do actively and continuously investigate the possibility of new routes. However, as I am sure you are aware, the airline business is complex with many factors to take into consideration, many of which are out of our control.
As always, we do thank you for your continuing support and interest in Humberside Airport.”
In my opinion, a based Tui unit would have been perfectly possible for summer 2023, but, it does seem like blah blah excuses.
I am no expert.
Just sad really!

HUY would probably have to invest In order to attract TUI based aircraft or a based aircraft from any operator for that matter. Do the sums add up? Currently they only need a higher cat fire cover 3 times a week at the most for instance, that’s easy to manage and is less financially burdensome. Is HUY an attractive proposition now that pretty much everywhere else has CAS and HUY doesn’t? Can TUI justify the expense of opening a single aircraft base and crewing it when they can just as easily serve the market from EMA and LBA? I think the will might be there from HUY management, but only as much as they have the tools available. I suspect the owners would want to know what’s in it for them, and whether it’s worth risking profitability for something that could be pulled on a whim and fancy anyway. I personally think there is now a solid market there if DSA remains closed, but I don’t believe Bristows are the right owners to deliver much growth as there would need to be fairly substantial investment to get to that point, and realistically the catchment area would not be able to support much more than 6-700,000 passengers a year. Is it worth it?

It would be good if the local media kept on this story because it's reasonable for people to ask questions about a local airport part owned by the local authority.

Yes regardless thanks for posting your feedback from the airport Permit123. I do wonder what input/interest N Lincs actually have these days, I would say previously there may have been conflicting interests given the proximity of Scunthorpe to DSA. They did used to publish minutes from meetings regarding Humberside but these don’t seem to be available any more? I do agree flyer, local media have all but ignored Humberside for years. I think since MAG sold up it’s taken a bit of a back seat. I wonder whether the airport might be worth more with DSA competition removed?

Just had as look at flight only availability TUI to Palma for May 2023. Nothing showing for sale except 30th when the price is £800 pp!!Even the package holiday option is closed for 16th. I know loads have always been good- anyone know if this is normal or an indication that demand is already starting to exceed supply 3 months before first departure. Is it a safe bet seat sales predictions will show a similar picture?

Is it a safe bet seat sales predictions will show a similar picture? On face value this would suggest that the rate of sale is high, which can only be a good thing if this is the case. I expect that the closure of DSA has channeled more people to book from Humberside. I’ve no idea how this compares to other airports like MME, NWI and EXT where they make a niche out of lack of nearby competition, but if this is the case it will enable TUI to take a risk and add to their destination portfolio from Humberside. I suspect the travel agents are pushing Humberside now in the absence of DSA which will help too. Of course, this could be a result of something else, but im taking it as a sigh of optimism.

Certainly suggests its selling well - I do wonder how many are early bookings transferred across from Doncaster to our flight, although I imagine most have gone to EMA. Anyone know what TUI did to those early bookers? Were they told they were going from East Midlands, or were they given options,, especially if booked for a Tuesday? Don't know anyone in that position and it hasn't come up in the DSA closure threads I have seen, either here or "Dried Fruit".
Playing around with the TUI booking engine, When you enter Monday 9th, it only seems to come up with 1 hotel option, which seems odd, and only if booking for 2 people - 3 and it comes up as "all gone". Wonder if the additional bank holiday on 8th is a factor, as mid-May is normally the quiet time - or if there is a shortage of accommodation on certain dates, rather than flights?
On flight only, the 9th flight only appears if booking for 2 passengers or less, and the 16th and 23rd don't come up at all, although 23rd is still selectable. Im not sure if seats a blocked for package holidays first with a limited flight only quota.

Departures on 16th and 23rd now no longer bookable To me suggests they’re either cancelled or full.. Suspect some people have been holding out in the hope DSA reopens. If they are filling up I would be very surprised if we didn’t see more for the following year assuming TUI arent forced to scale back massively.

I can only find fewer than 10 seats, over 2 dates, available on the Palma flights in the whole of May. A quick check on some other airports shows they have seats on all their May departures.Must be indicative of the potential for new sun routes that are backed with a package offer. If not TUI who? Not many left in the business to try and attract is there.
